What are Helical Piers?

Helical Piers are utilized for supporting (and even raising) foundations. Helical Piers come in various different shapes and sizes which are all catered to your specific project requirements. Helical piers are screw piles that are drilled into the ground until the required torque depth are achieved. These helical piers can be utilized for raising and supporting foundations or can be built upon to support a new foundation for new construction.

A helical pier consists of helices (bearing plates) welded to a centralized shaft (can be a round or square steel shaft). As the helical pier is drilled into the soil, the helices will cut through the sub surface and while adding stability to the surrounding area. This adds support to the sub surface which will lead to more stability to the building above grade.

 Helical piers can come in a wide variety of styles, from round shaft to square shaft, from diameter of the shafts (i.e. square shaft- 1.25” to 2.25”, round shaft- 2.875” to 4.5”), and from the number of helices (1-4 per shaft). Helical Piers for Solving Building Settlement:

Whether the building has a sinking slab, brick, or block foundation Helical Piers is the correct solution to bring your building’s integrity back! Helical piers are screw piles that will be drilled into the ground until the acceptable torque rating is reached in order for the pier to reach its load capacity. To use a helical pier, excavation around the problem area will be needed. The pier(s) will be placed at/near the problem area of the foundation (footing) in order to eliminate the sinking. The “L” shaped underpinning bracket(s) will be attached to the chiseled section of the footing so the pier(s) can begin to take on the weight of the structure.

Once the pier(s) and bracket(s) are in place, the lifting begins with a hydraulic jack pushing down on the helical pier and raising the footing back to its original position. Backfilling the excavation site is then the last step to the process.

Helical Piers for New Construction

New construction helical piles are for poor soil areas, that are too unstable to construct new buildings/structures on. They consist of lead sections with bolted couplings, extensions, and pile caps. They are cost-effective and have no disturbance to the surrounding areas. The piles will be drilled into the ground to the required depth and torque to eliminate the active soil that the building will be constructed on.

With a “speedy” installation time frame, these helical piles can be installed in any weather condition, limited access areas, and can take on the load immediately after installation. Our piles are evaluated by ESR-2794 from ICC Evaluation Service. Per the engineering requirements, the piles will be placed per the engineering plans provided to provide the strength and durability that the helical piles can accomplish.

Helical Piers to Strengthen Retaining Walls

A Helical tieback is made up of a lead section consisting of helices that are welded onto the steel shaft of the pier. Each helix acts as a separate anchor for maximum holding capacity.

Helical tiebacks are used to secure retaining walls or to secure shoring of excavations. Multi-helix screw anchors are used because they enable the tiebacks to remove the performance uncertainties and costs associated with a grouted anchor when used in loose, sandy and low-shear-strength clay soils. When screwed into the soil, the helical anchor acts as a deep, end-bearing tension member to secure the retaining wall.

Other advantages to tiebacks for retaining walls and shoring include:

  • Tiebacks may be installed with conventional rotary drilling equipment.
  • Screw anchors are quick to install. Typical installation time per tie back is 20-30 minutes with no spoils removal necessary.
  • Elimination of grout allows for immediate loading or testing.
  • In some cases, the screw anchors can be withdrawn and reused.
